Therefore, it is essential to achieve sustainable development to achieve a balance between economy, society and nature. That is why the United Nations (UN) establishes this theme as a common objective establishing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with a target date of 2030. In this context, innovative solutions are necessary that apply the knowledge of humanity as well as technological capabilities but with a professional ethic that seeks the common benefit. It is at this point that the engineers appear. These professionals acquire planning, resource management and process analysis skills during their training. Thus conforming as important actors of interdisciplinary groups that contribute to improve the environmental quality. In this work, the results achieved in the Lafflitto engineering doctoral thesis (2017) in the search for sustainable development in the Matanza Riachuelo Basin (CMR), an emblematic case of environmental degradation in the Argentine Republic, were related. Along with the generic and specific competences for the case of industrial engineering proposed by the Federal Council of Deans of Engineering (CONFEDI).
